What is your Alzheimer's and cardiovascular diseases risks?
APoe4 gene variant has been associated with both disorders
Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Universe, recently revealed he is at increased risk of developing Alzheimer's due to a genetic predisposition. How does he know? He has two copies of the gene APOE4, one from each parent.
Having 1 copy of APOE4 gene increases your risk of developing Alzheimer's by x2 to x3. Having 2 copies, increases your risk approximately by x14.
According to the National Institutes of Health (USA), approximately 25% of the population carry 1 copy of the gene, but only 2-3% carry 2 copies.
Recent studies have also associated APOEe4 with lower Verbal Performance, and Full Scale IQ scores during childhood and adolescence especially in females.
Hearing the news can be unsettling; however, we are talking about risks here and not determinism. Having the genetic variant that creates the APOE E4 version of the protein is one of many risk factors and does not mean you will get any disease associated with it.
Holding the knowledge is a great advantage for prevention. The earlier we know, the better
New research is showing that there are 4 easy ways to cut your Alzheimer’s risk in half:
-
Supplementing specific omega-3 fish oils
-
Monitoring your B Vitamins status
-
Exercising (particular types of mental and physical activities)
-
Reducing Sugar (“Blood sugar levels at age 35 predict Alzheimer’s risk later in life”)
Scientific research has identified 4 other domains of risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Targeting all eight risk factors earlier in life may reduce risk by 2/3.
